Mobile phone service is spotty along your route and we do not have coverage here at the property so it is important that you follow these directions carefully to ensure a smooth arrival.
From Anchorage Directions
From Anchorage, you will travel approximately 100 miles South from Anchorage via AK-1 and then AK-9 (The Seward Highway). The last gas station along the route before the cabins is in Girdwood (~30 miles south of Anchorage), so top up here if you are running low.
There is a long term road construction project on the Seward Highway which is the only access road to the cabins. On Sunday to Thursday nights from 9:30 PM to 11:00 PM the road is CLOSED for blasting and you will not be able to reach the cabins. We recommend you plan to spend some additional time in Anchorage if this closure impacts your arrival. Additionally, when the construction is active, you may need to wait for a pilot car both at the entrance to the construction zone and the exit of the cabins, which will require additional time for your trip/excursion plans.
The road construction makes finding the entrance to the cabins difficult. The last town before the cabins is called Moose Pass. Once you reach this point start reviewing these directions to ensure a smooth arrival:
- You will drive approximately 8 miles south of Moose Pass and see the I.R.B.I. Knife Shop on your left with a sign that looks like a large pocket knife.
- You will then cross the Victor Creek Bridge, which is being replaced and has cranes and large construction equipment around it.
- Look for the Renfro’s Lakeside Retreat sign on the right side IMMEDIATELY after the bridge. There will be two pennants by the road and an open flag in addition to a log cabin.
- You will make a right turn into what looks like a construction access and arrive at the property entrance. If you miss the turn, you will have to wait for the pilot car again so ensure you keep a close watch for the turn once you pass the knife shop and bridge.
- There will be a large two-story log lodge on your left. This is the office for Renfro’s Lakeside Retreat and NOT the Cabins at Kenai Lake. Please continue down the road and take a right at the fork where you will see a Western looking cabin.
- Optional: If you prefer visual maps over directions, there is a hand-drawn map of the property posted in the window of the Western cabin which includes the locations of all our buildings and amenities.
- Proceed to your cabin (directions included below) and park. You will not be able to drive your vehicle all the way up to most of the cabins. Please park prior to the barricades and walk or cart in any necessary items.
Cabin/Building Directions
There are wooden signs on the property that indicate the locations of each building by name in addition to these directions.
Chenega & Yakutat
Continue straight past the Western Cabin and pass the railroad tracks. Make a right turn and continue, veering left, until you see the water spigot on the right and woodshed on the left. At the intersection, the Yakutat is on the left and the Chenega is on the right. The shower is located behind the garage directly through the intersection.
Ketchikan
Continue straight past the Western Cabin and pass the railroad tracks. Continue straight down the road until you see watercraft and a bend in the road. The Ketchikan will be on the right. NOTE: These watercraft are Renfro’s Lakeside Retreat’s. Please see below for the location of the watercraft for The Cabins at Kenai Lake.
Nabesna
You will see a sign on the right directly after the Westen Cabin. Park the car before the sign and continue walking down the trail. NOTE: The closest water spigot to the Nabesna is behind the Western Cabin.
Garage (Shower & Watercraft)
Continue straight past the Western Cabin and pass the railroad track. Make a right turn and continue until you see the water spigot on the right and woodshed on the left. The garage will be directly in front of you. The shower is located behind the garage directly in front of the intersection. The watercraft can be found on the left side of the garage.
Sauna/Hot Tub
Follow directions for the garage. Continue on the trail on the left towards the beach. Walk down the beach and continue to the red sauna building.
